LIFT Rwanda, working with the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), the Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) and district education offices, shared the update this week with teachers, head teachers and partners across the seven districts where the programme works.
The work is part of LIFT's effort to make sure every child in the early primary grades learns to read and count with confidence, including girls, children with disabilities and children in remote schools.
“When teachers have the tools and the support to use them every day, the change in the classroom is quick and it lasts,” said a LIFT programme lead.
Teachers described how the new routines fit into the existing timetable. Several head teachers asked for coaching visits to continue through the next term, and district officers said they would build the activity into their own school plans.

Progress is tracked through simple reading and numeracy checks that teachers carry out themselves, and through independent assessments at the start, middle and end of each year. Results are shared with districts so they can decide where support is needed most.
“This is not an extra programme. It is how we teach every day,” a head teacher said.
Over the coming months LIFT and its partners will extend the activity to more schools, keep gathering feedback from teachers, and publish what is learned so other districts can use it.

More information, including resources for teachers, is available on the LIFT resources page.
